Finding and downloading models[]

SteamWorkshopGMOD

First you will need to install either Garry's Mod or Source Film Maker on steam, once either one is fully installed you can enter the workshop by clicking the workshop button, as shown by the yellow highlighted area on the embedded image.

After that you simply need to find a model, or twenty to your liking and subscribe to them. For steam to start downloading the subscribed models you will need to start up the game, this is for both cases (Gmod/SFM).

Garry's Mod workshop files will be located at:

SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\GarrysMod\garrysmod\addons

While Source Film Maker workshop files will be at:

SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\SourceFilmmaker\game\workshop

Unpacking Garry's Mod Addons[]

Garry's Mod workshop files are in .gma format, to unpack them you will need to create a new folder and place a copy of Gmad - Easy Addon Extractor.exe program and gmad.exe from Garry's Mod install folder.

Then you copy over your .gma workshop files to your newly created folder and run Gmad - Easy Addon Extractor.exe. You will now see your addons as unpacked folders containing their models and textures.

Getting workshop models into Blender[]

Use Crowbar to decompile the data in the folder, by selecting the folder as the target and selecting your output folder as the, well, output folder. When it is done, the model comes in a .smd format. To get this model into blender, download the tool here. The instructions to apply this add-on is on the webpage. Now, if you select Import, a new option (Source Engine) allows you to import .smd, .vta, .dmx, and .qc file. Your model is in .smd format, so you can select the option and find your .smd file from there.
